St Philip and St James Youth Club
Hodge Hill Common, Birmingham, West Midlands, England.
Hi, I’m Dave Bennett and together with my wife Chris Bennett née Pearce and our good friends Tom Clarke and his wife Gill Clarke née Allen have decided to try and track down as many former members of the youth club as possible. We still live in the area and are already in contact with a few. If you would like to make contact you can do so via Friends Reunited. www.friendsreunited.co.uk It’s free to join and use.
Search for a place called St Philip and St James in the West Midlands.
It is listed under Teams and Clubs / Youth Groups.
We’re looking for Former Members
Where are you now?
The first church on the site was built in the 1940s. A multi-purpose building with the Chancel behind folding doors at the back of the stage. By the mid 1950s Madison Hall (a concrete building) and a Scout Hut (126 group) had been added to the site. Both of these were demolished to make way for the new Church and Community Centre built in 1968 to replace the original church destroyed by fire in 1966.
This new building has now been demolished because of the high cost of repairs.
In the 1950s and early 60s the youth club was run by Mr Ernie Vann (Common Keeper) on a Tuesday evening. It was extended to Sunday evenings by Rev Dennis Ede when he took over from Rev Hussey.
Or if you have a connection with one of the four of us you could contact us
We will be delighted to hear from you.
We are particularly interested in the period 1955 to 1965 but of course all are welcome.
